We had a GREAT first week! I think it is safe to say we are all very excited about first grade! One of the ways we kicked off this week was to watch a pep talk from the Kid President about 20 things we should say more often. After we watched we practiced by giving classmates compliments. The things they said to each other were so sweet!
We also began our Daily 5 by learning about what it means to be independent and how to read-to-self. For read to self we build our stamina. We talk about the word stamina and that it means how long we can do something. We start out read-to-self time for 3 minutes. We practice, come back for a lesson, practice for 3 minutes, come back for a lesson, and repeat until we have done this several times. Every day we will add on 1 or 2 minutes to our time and we are graphing our progress on a chart we have made in class. The goal is to build up to where we can read for 20 minutes at a time.
Our very first lesson was the 3 ways we can read a book. We can read the pictures and figure out the story, read the words, or have a familiar story and read it by retelling it (an example we used was Goldilock's and the Three Bears).
Next week we will learn about picking books that are a good fit for us and learn how to shop our classroom library for books.
The reason it is called Daily 5 is because there are 5 parts we will have once we have built our stamina. Our first focus is reading to self, but the 5 parts that we will eventually have are:
~Read to Self
~Read to Someone
~Listen to Reading
~Work on Words
~Work on Writing
Everyday during our guided reading time students will choose an activity and will cycle through the 5 choices before starting over. During this time I will be meeting with small groups of students to give reading lessons and work with them on the standards and skills for the day. For part of the time Mrs. Center will also be working with a small group of students giving small group lessons. Since this is a teaching time we also took time to talk about the job students have during read-to-self and the job the teacher has during read-to-self.
