Yesterday we had our second "reading reunion". This time students brought some of their favorite books and used the app AudioBoom to record themselves reading. When they upload their recording to the AudioBoom website it generates a QR code. My plan is to print out the QR codes and put them on the front of copies of the books that the students read so that future students can scan and listen during their Daily 5 Listen to Reading time. Fingers crossed that I can get it to all work out the way I am envisioning it in my head ;).

Today we had our very first "reading reunion". Each student that came got to pick 2 books that they would like to recommend that we read this summer.
If you are like me then you probably find it hard to believe that our school year is finished. This year flew by so fast! I guess it is true what they say, "time flies when you are having fun". I have truly enjoyed working with all of your students this year and am going to miss them so much next year. It is always so amazing to see how much they grow between August and June. There are so many great memories from this year. I can't wait to see all their hashtag reading selfies on Instagram this summer (#seemereadmpsbailey)! So much happened at the end of the year that I am just going to load them on here as a massive slide show (I've almost figured out how to turn them so that they are facing the correct way :) It'll be one of my summer goals to figure out how to do that every time LOL). These pictures include awards day, their play (Arf!), water day, and the last few days of school, learning how to blow bubbles, and career day. Thank you so much for all the things you have done to help in our classroom and at home this year! Tomorrow we have our Social Studies Benchmark test. Here is a power point Mrs. V made to help us review:
This week we started our end of year Benchmark testing. To help get us ready we used our morning meeting time to review science and reading. We also had some students from BHP come and help us plant tomato plants to help us review what plants need and plant parts. We also started learning about telling time to the hour and half hour. We used a hula hoop and small clocks to help use practice this skill. In writing we started how-to writings. The kids had a blast trying to write directions for how to use the slide and see if their directions could get me to use the slide correctly! You can tell it is the time of year where everything gets very busy! I am just going to do a quick update from the past 3 weeks using mostly pictures. Disclaimer: we have reached the craziest part of the year so there may be less posts. We got to have a lesson taught by our teacher cadet, Miss Davis, and she did a fabulous job of helping us review <, >, and =. We used a giant 120 chart to help us learn about counting by 10's and then worked with partners to practice using a worksheet. We also spent time in math learning about measurement. We focused on non-standard measurement so we would use our shoes to measure how tall classmates are, measured the carpet using classmates, and used cubes to measure objects in the room.
This week was also our music teacher, Mrs. Brown's birthday! We used her for a special morning meeting where we used adjectives to describe her. For Earth Day the school had a wall display contest and First grade won! We were so excited! And speaking of winners, last month all the classes in the school made a Young Author book to showcase their writing. I am excited to share that our class winner was also the grade level winner! Congratulations to our amazing author! All the kids worked so hard! Here is a picture of our winner showing off her winning piece of writing! This week we had a review week, but that doesn't mean that the kids got to take it easy. They worked so hard that they definitely earned their break. We used the book Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs to review several of our reading skills. We found cause and effect situations in the story, used meatballs to sort nouns and verbs on the Promethean Board, made a story map about the characters, setting, and events in the story and much more. On Friday we even compared the book and the movie and used it as a chance to learn that a lot of times a book doesn't match the movie even if they have the same name. We also reviewed the /oo/ sound by making double o looking glasses. In math we started working with comparing numbers using <, >, and =. We played several games and used a youtube video to help warm-up our brains each day. The link below will take you to a game that they absolutely LOVED playing in class to help review. http://www.toonuniversity.com/flash.asp?err=509&engine=9 We also used our spelling time to build our sight word fluency. I am including 2 of the videos that we used in class to practice sight words and 2 of the videos we used in math.
To celebrate the end of the third nine weeks we had an egg hunt. The kids all had such a good time! Thank you to everyone who sent in eggs and snacks! I will post pictures after break (I am waiting to get them from our parent helpers). :) We also had a meatball party to end our book study of Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. (In the partner pictures we are playing a game to find the missing addend that was hidden behind their partners back.) In math this week we spent time working with place value (ones and tens) and we also started skip counting by 5's. These are all important skills that will be the building blocks for money in 2nd grade. The two videos below are what we used to warm-up our brains. Next week we will be doing a week of review. We will use the book a Snowy Day to review cause and effect and we will also focus several of our lessons around the book Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Those activities will help us review:
~cause and effect ~main idea ~verbs and nouns ~opinion writing ~and so much more! Your student should have also brought home a note about an egg hunt next Friday. Next week will be a very fun week but it will also be very busy! It is hard to believe there are less than 50 days left in the school year! Time sure flies when you are having fun! This week we used our whole class reading time to build our reading skills and we started working more with our comprehension friends: ~Rocky Raccoon (visualize) ~Spinner the Spider (making connections) ~Jabber the Reteller (summarize and retell) ~Digger the Dog (dig for facts and information) ~Questioning Owl (the image I am using came from http://thekindergardenteacher.blogspot.com/2013/07/beany-baby-reading-comprehension-posters.html, our posters look a little different but the strategies are the same).
March 2 was Dr. Seuss' birthday. The first grade teachers surprised the kids Friday by having a Dr. Seuss celebration. We made Oobleck, painted a Lorax and used our following direction skills to complete a Cat in the Hat. This link will take you to the Oobleck recipe: http://www.food.com/recipe/dr-seuss-oobleck-289923 |
